Seventeenth Century

  1. The artillery garden - images of 17th Century artillery from various sources.
  2. Articles and Ordinances of Warre - this was the code of conduct for the Scots army that fought the Royalists in England in 1644, during the first Civil War.
  3. The Gunner's Glass (Summarised) by William Eldred, sometimes Mr. Gunner of Dover Castle. WARNING: LARGE FILE (256K), with lots of tables. Due to its nature, ie lots of tables, I have decided that it can't be split into easy-to-read pages.
  4. Annex to the Gunner's Glass - part of the Excellent Work published in Spanish by Diago Uffano, Captain of the Artillery of Antwerp Castle. (This may have been written by Eldred, instead of him just translating it).
  5. Parliament Army Pay rates - from Barriffe, 1661.

Napoleonic War

Getting back into 15mm Napoleonics. I have tried a number of different rule sets, and have not been happy with any of them. We played a few games of 6mm Napoleonics using DBM as a core with amendments largely from WRG's "1685-1845" rules (presented here) but, while fine for large scale 6mm battles, I am not happy using them for 15mm figures. Finally decided on the Shako rules system by Arty Conliffe, and am using a basing arrangement 'C'.

A few months later, started using Tom Penn's Napoleonic Principles of War rules set. Seems okay too, and the lads at the club have been using the other PoW rules for other periods, so are familiar with the game mechanisms. After trying that for a couple of months, we tried the Fire & Fury varient set, and seem to have settled on that...for now.

I am using 15mm Essex Miniatures figures, and can now field a reasonable amount of French figures, so have started on the Austrians, though as you can see from the pictures below, I am a naff painter.

American Civil War

Despite early reservations, I enjoy playing American Civil War games, and use the Johnny Reb 2nd edition rules. As mentioned above, I prefer organising my figures around a particular battle, and my ACW figures are based around the fight at Antietam (Sharpsburg) on the 17th of September 1862. This is still known as "America's bloodiest day" and its aftermath was photographed in detail.

Dark Ages

After reading Bernard Cornwell's "Warlord" trilogy, I wanted to try some non-DBM post-Roman/early Dark Ages games. The figures are 25/28mm from Gripping Beast and we have tried a small skirmish using Warhammer Ancient Battles and the Fall of the West supplement. It seemed to work out okay.

Basing is at 25x25mm for foot and 25x50mm for horse, with painted sand/grit and static grass. Paints are a mixture of everything from Humbrol to Windsor & Newton - whatever is in the box at the time.

Ironclads

Bought a few 1/1200 boats from various sources and tried a few different rules. We seem to have settled on the Hammerin Iron II rules.
